The examples below will give you an idea about the types of hearing aids available; (shape, size, cosmetics etc)

Receiver in the Canal (RIC / RITE)
These instruments fit behind the ear and send the sound via a tiny wire into the receiver, which is placed directly in the ear canal. The amplified sound, which is produced by the receiver, provides exceptional clarity and enhances the high-pitched speech sounds with excellent sound quality. A soft earpiece holds the receiver in place without plugging the ear canal giving a natural sound and a comfortable fit. They are suitable for a mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss. Completely-in-the-canal (CIC)
This type of hearing aid, as the name suggests, is contained completely in the canal. It is the least conspicuous of the various styles and so if the cosmetic appearance of the aid is important this may be the first choice. Modern digital technology has made the fitting range of this type much wider and it is now possible to fit most hearing losses with a CIC aid, canal size permitting. There are some disadvantages compared with the other styles, which should be considered. The small size may not be a good choice where manual dexterity is not as good as it used to be. The batteries are small with a life of 5 –7 days, although at about 60p each this should not be a cost problem. Some electronic options such as directional microphones and loop systems are not available (they take up too much space) Hearing Aid Prices

Canal/Half concha (ITC)
This style is larger than the CIC, which enables the manufacturer to extend the fitting range and to incorporate the more electronic devices such as loop systems and directional microphones. The larger size and battery makes them easier to manage and also increases the options for the hearing aid audiologist to modify the acoustic effects by the use of venting where appropriate. In-the-Ear Hearing Instruments (ITE)
This style completely fills the bowl of the ear and gives the widest fitting range for in the ear styles as well as incorporating the latest electronic options. Some clients find this the easiest to handle. Hearing Aid Prices

Behind-the-Ear Hearing Instruments (BTE)
This is the familiar style that fits over the ear and is connected to an ear mould that fits in the ear canal. This style gives the most fitting options such as very high power for the severe and profoundly hearing impaired. It is often the fitting of choice for difficult audiometric configurations such as high frequency losses. Where there is a history of discharge from the ears this is often the only option. To help with the cosmetics of this type of fitting it is possible to match the casing with the hair colour. Hearing Aid Prices
